MODY Diabetes, Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young

diabetes mellitusMODY (Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young ) is an autosomal dominant inherited form of diabetes. MODY is a mild form of diabetes resembling type 2 diabetes mellitus. In diabetes MODY does the pancreas (pancreatic) in an insufficient increase in blood glucose (blood sugar) and therefore gives too little insulin. Insulin is a hormone that ensures that glucose (sugar) is absorbed into the body cells. Glucose serves as fuel for the cells. There are six known diabetes MODY type, which is diverse in form and severity.

Characteristics of MODY Diabetes are:
- It usually starts at a young age.
- Few years MODY can be treated without insulin and therefore insulin independent.
-There are at least four MODY as first-degree relatives (parents, children, brothers, sisters) at a young age, diabetes arose, at least for two to five years could be treated without insulin. At least two persons is the disease diagnosed for the 25th year of life.

Diabetes MODY Diagnosis
MODY is suspected on the above characteristics. Moreover, the diagnosis may be confirmed by genetic research.

MODY Diabetes Treatment
Treatment of MODY diabetes varies by type. Most mensem with MODY-3 respond well to low dose sulphonylureas, which are drugs that stimulate the production of insulin. MODY-2 at its dietary advice often enough. Other types of MODY are usually treated with insulin.

According to medical research, it is estimated that 2 to 4% of all people with diabetes mellitus type 2, MODY does. Diabetes MODY-3 in United States and Europe (France, Italy, Poland, Russia, Spain, United Kingdom)  is the most common, followed by diabetes MODY-2 and MODY-1 diabetes.

Medical Information Diabetes Mellitus Classifications

diabetes mellitus logoThere are some classifications types of Diabetes Mellitus (DM), the Diabetes Mellitus type are :

  • Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 (Diabetes i, diabetes 1)

Type 1 diabetes (diabetes i, also known as diabetes 1) because under lack of insulin deficiency because of idiopathic or immune-induced decrease of functioning beta cells in the pancreas (5% of diabetics). It usually develops in childhood or even adolescence (juvenile diabetes).

  • Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 (Diabetes ii, diabetes 2 for children)

Type 2 diabetes (diabetes ii, also known as diabetes 2) partially by peripheral insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency (> 85% of diabetics). It usually occurs until later in life or until the age (adult onset diabetes).

  • Diabetes MODY (Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young)

Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY diabetes) with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in young people, caused by an autosomal dominant disorder of insulin secretion (not the insulin effect) no insulin resistance. Six genetic types known.

  • Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) resembles Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in several respects, involving a combination of insulin secretion and responsiveness relatively poor. Occurs in approximately 2% -5% of all pregnancies and may improve or disappear after delivery. Gestational diabetes is fully treatable but requires careful medical supervision during pregnancy. Approximately 20% -50% of women with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus later in life.

  • Other Diabetes Mellitus forms

Other diabetes forms for example caused by pancreatitis, surgery, trauma, drugs (diazoxide, pentamidine, thyroid hormones, glucocorticoids, interferon alpha, etc.), endocrinopathies (Cushing’s syndrome, glucagonom, pheochromocytoma, etc.), hemochromatosis, cystic fibrosis.

I will give more explanation about type of Diabetes Mellitus classifications above at my next articles.
